BSMC: Italian State Library of modern and contemporary history IMAGINATION brings together academics, technologists and users with profound experience in knowledge management, content engineering, image recognition and GUI visualisation.
The composition of IMAGINATION consortium is optimal to implement its main objective: pioneer research in combining image segmentation, image recognition and text mining approaches to deliver a highly context-aware system, which is accessed and demonstrated through visual interactivity at the users end. For this purpose IMAGINATION will arrange mutual collaboration among the following research teams: “face detection and person identification” (lead by IIS), “text-mining” (led by JSI), “person and object detection” (led by NTUA), and “semantic technologies” (led by FZI).
As a result of this collaboration a unified  contextualisation methodology will be devised, which will produce a set of automated multimedia metadata. At this stage the SMEs RIDemo and disy join the workflow by providing tools and methodology to define metadata management. This process will involve active participation of IMAGINATION domain experts (BSMC), who will guide the technological implementation from the user perspective. At the same time our ontology expert FZI will closely collaborate with the domain experts (BSMC) to modify the ontology, so that it is best fitted for the integration phase, and contributes to increased context-sensitivity at the demonstration phase. Once this work is completed, our content providers, PHOTO12 and BSMC are involved. They will provide multimedia content, which will be used for testing and running the system. Simultaneously, RIDemo and disy will cooperate with users (BSMC, PHOTO12) to develop the interactive GUI of IMAGINATION. Having disy in the consortium we ensure the industrial exploitation of our scientific results because disy has a long term experience in turning research results into products. Some of IMAGINATION partners have already collaborated with each other in IST partnerships before. This will contribute to a shorter kick-off phase and ensure more efficient collaboration during the project life cycle. In IMAGINATION each partner is assigned a strictly defined role in the overall project’s workflow. Partner roles directly correspond to their expertise and previous experience.
