FZI, located in Karlsruhe, is a non-profit contract research organisation that concentrates its efforts on novel information technologies for providers of investment and consumer products, of production processes and of information services. FZI supports the development of innovative applications on the basis of recent but already proven techniques. The organisation of FZI is unique in that it permits professors from the University of Karlsruhe, to extend their obligations in academic research in the direction of more market-oriented activities, by providing a technical and organisational infrastructure that is particularly congenial to establishing close contacts to industry and service organisations. Most important, FZI offers its partners a unique interdisciplinary environment that fosters joint research among diverse fields of Informatics, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Currently, professors from all three faculties co-operate closely under the roof of FZI. FZI is judged a unique model of interdisciplinary technology transfer that has now been operating successfully for 20 years. Today, FZI is close to 80 employees, among them more than 60 young scientists within currently 4 research groups, contributes to an annual turnover of some 6 Mio €. FZI has experience in a huge number of national and EU funded projects in different areas, like the TAP-funded project European Environmental Information Services (EEIS) and CoastBase, the European Virtual Coastal & Marine Data Warehouse. National and European projects, like DIP, LIP, VICODI, OntoLogging - Distributed Ontology-based Knowledge Management, CONSense - Cooperative Knowledge Management in Virtual Organizations, shows FZIs special role in the area of knowledge management and ontologies.
